THEATRE PHOTOGRAPHY

Alan Dean has photographed hundreds of theatre, dance and musical performances at many venues, including the Great Canadian Theatre Company, the National Arts Centre, and Centrepointe Theatre. Rather than using flash, he relies solely on stage lighting to capture the mood and movement onstage. While shooting a dress rehearsal, he is constantly in motion, adjusting his perspective with the movement onstage and making split-second decisions in reaction to the constantly changing lighting. "There are so many variables to consider, and you always have to anticipate what's going to happen next," he says. He also provides publicity photos to theatre companies for use in posters and press kits.
